iPhone tops handset recycling comparison table

In the wake of the launch and release of two new iPhones last month, it is unsurprising that stats show that Apple's older handsets were the most commonly searched-for items on UK mobile recycling sites in September.
Analysts found that iPhone recycling price comparisons dominated the market, with 42 per cent of searches relating to this brand of device.
The 16GB version of the three year old iPhone 4 was the most popular of Apple's handsets, ahead of the iPhone 4S 16GB.
Interestingly, when you break it down on a phone-by-phone basis, Samsung's Galaxy S2 takes third place, accounting for almost eight per cent of recycling searches.
When looking at the 30 most regularly recycled handsets, it was found that these devices only came from five different manufacturers, which shows just how tough it is for smaller firms to crack the market in the UK.
Samsung took home 20 per cent of searches, just behind BlackBerry, which nabbed 22 per cent. Both of these are quite a way behind Apple, but there are various reasons for this.
Apple smartphones retain their value better than any other handset, which makes selling your old iPhone at the end of your contract all the more appealing. This could influence people to take more of an interest in recycling if they have an iPhone.
In addition, Apple's new devices are still comparatively expensive, which makes it necessary to find quite a bit of cash if you want to buy one outright. So by using recycling sites, you can recoup some money from your outgoing model to reinvest in the replacement.
The spike in iPhone interest following the launch of new models is to be expected, so it will be interesting to see if this lead is subsequently maintained.
