iPhone 5 screen size rumours resurface

Apple could be adding a four inch display to the next iPhone when it launches in the middle of 2012, according to sources quoted by iLounge.
Some fans were disappointed when the iPhone 4S was launched without any major changes to the outwardly visible hardware over its predecessor, which meant that while the Retina Display was still as dense with pixels as ever, its 3.5 inch size looks a little dinky compared with its contemporaries at the top end of the market.
It is now increasingly likely that the sixth iPhone handset, which could confusingly be called the iPhone 5, will sport a bigger four inch display.
This will still be over half an inch smaller than that of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and a majority of HTC's current and next-gen Android smartphones, but size is rarely a deal breaker when it comes to Apple.
With a four inch screen, the iPhone 5 will apparently be eight millimetres longer than the iPhone 4 and 4S, representing yet another drastic departure from the design that has defined this range since its inception.
A slim body seems likely to remain the calling card of the iPhone when its next model is unveiled, particularly since this is an area in which Apple's rivals have been making significant progress.
A bigger screen could result in further fundamental changes to the iPhone, only this time it will be the software that is affected.
The next iteration of the iOS platform may be modified to harness the extra half an inch of onscreen real estate, which might result in further differences between the iPhone 5 and its smaller precursors.
Of course Apple has not confirmed any of these rumours and is unlikely to do so until it is ready to give the sixth iPhone its official unveiling in 2012.
