eBay Joins Amazon in Entering Bricks-and-Mortar Retail Market

Auction site eBay is one of the oldest brands in the world of safe shopping online, yet like other big hitters, including Amazon, it has been eyeing the physical retail market in recent years and has actually taken the plunge by opening a high street store this month.
The firm is keen to emphasise that this is a one-off concept outlet rather than being the blueprint for broader plans to roll out into the bricks-and-mortar market, according to Internet Retailing. However, there are some intriguing ideas at play here which could hint at an intriguing new future for eBay and its partners.
Opened in Wolverhampton, the store is not simply designed to cater to eBay as an organisation but rather acts as a space within which the businesses which use its platform to sell products to customers can congregate.
The store marries many of the benefits of high street retail with those of the digital realm. Customers will be able to complete transactions through the use of QR codes, while real-time sales tracking will enable in-depth analytics to be accessible at all times.
This is not just a means of demonstrating the potential that exists in the high street for eBay but also acts as a showcase for the benefits that businesses can glean if they enter the physical retail market rather than solely operating online.
Because of its pop-up nature, this is not a permanent fixture in the same vein as Amazon’s Go stores. Instead it will be temporarily occupied by around 40 different businesses and then dismantled once the concept has run its course.
Even with this outlet only being open for a short period, eBay is likely to gain a lot of impactful insights that could cause shifts in its e-commerce strategies in the future.
