Zero Waste Awards celebrate recycling innovators

This month saw the Zero Waste Awards take place in Warwickshire, recognising the various organisations and individuals that are doing their bit to help improve recycling rates in the UK.
The awards are not just about promoting the benefits of recycling, according to spokesperson, Steve Eminton. In addition, they look to enhance the profile of campaigns associated with a more sustainable approach to many areas, from waste management to energy efficiency and even water usage.
The awards are mostly targeted at businesses, with the intention of encouraging companies to think about the levels of eco-friendliness which exist in their operations.
WasteCare MD, Peter Hunt, whose company sponsors the awards, said that they provided an opportunity for companies to receive plaudits for their recycling and sustainability efforts.
So far, the awards have seen 30 companies receive gongs for their green initiatives, with many more likely to be similarly endowed in the future.
There are a variety of different ways in which businesses can behave more responsibly when it comes to waste disposal. For example, an award was recently handed down to a company which decided to stop sending old office furniture to landfill and, instead, responsibly recycle it.
Businesses can also improve their green credentials by selling old mobile phones no longer needed by staff.
Electronic waste is a particularly significant concern for many companies, with the smartphone churn meaning that devices can become obsolete within two years, which produces a lot of unwanted devices.
Mobile recycling is easy to achieve, relatively secure and can help companies to recoup some of the cash they invested in the handsets in the first place.
Hopefully, the Zero Waste Awards will recognise the importance of mobile phone recycling, thus giving more companies reason to participate in this practice.
