Windows Phone 8 launched

Microsoft has now chalked up two major announcements this week, first with its Surface tablet and now with the revelation that Windows Phone 8 is well on the way to completion.
Top of the list of features which will be supported by Windows Phone 8 are multi-core processors, which is something that many perceived as being sorely lacking in its predecessor.
Other major hardware changes are expected, with three distinct resolutions available, rather than the standard 800x480, which was enforced across Windows Phone 7 handsets.
Higher resolutions will be used to make it easier to squeeze even more Live Tiles onto the homescreen, which could allow for even more customisation options and an increasingly distinct look.
Sadly those with a smartphone running earlier iterations of Windows Phone, will not be getting Windows Phone 8 as part of an update, when it releases in the autumn.
This is partly due to the change in screen resolution and the overall alterations which are being made to the code, as Microsoft stated that the core of the software will mirror that of its full Windows 8 desktop operating system release.
NFC (near field communication) compatibility will be integrated for the first time, allowing users to harness the Microsoft Wallet service that lets them make contactless payments when they are out and about.
In addition, the next generation of Windows Phone handsets will be able to support expandable storage via SD memory cards, which is again a much maligned absence on current gen models, like the Nokia Lumia 800.
Microsoft is hoping that it has done enough to make current users loyal enough to accept that they will not be getting the full Windows Phone 8 experience and thus encourage them to sell their old handsets, in ordver to upgrade to the new models.
