Windows Phone 7 gets Swype-style typing

Android users may be familiar with Swype, a convenient typing add-on which removes the need for tapping out individual letters and instead relies on reading the user's sweeping finger movements across the virtual keyboard to spell out words. Now Windows Phone 7 has its own pretender to this style of interaction in the form of the Sliding Keyboard app.
The app has recently launched in the UK and is on sale for 99p, although, like all apps on the Windows Phone marketplace, there is a free trial version to check out if you want to see what it is all about.
While typing on touchscreen phones has improved greatly over the years there are still those that prefer the accuracy and feedback provided by a slide-out QWERTY keypad. This usually means you have to pick a heavier, bulkier mobile than the touch-only alternatives, but this may be a worthwhile sacrifice if you type regularly on your smartphone.
With first Swype and now Sliding Keyboard, a more fluid, finger-friendly alternative to standard typing is available on two of the world's major smartphone platforms.
Apple has yet to integrate this kind of functionality into the iOS software and may well stick to its guns on this issue, but the slightly less locked-down worlds of Android and Windows Phone 7 give users the opportunity to try out something new.
The app for Windows Phone 7 is in its early stages and will certainly undergo some revisions after users criticised the occasional inaccuracies in its word selections.
What it does indicate is that developers are starting to get to grips with the workings of Windows Phone 7 and build an app library which is comparable with that offered by either Android or Apple, albeit in a more concentrated, quality-focused format.
