Welsh schools commit to electronic waste recycling initiative

Children across South Wales will be learning all about the benefits of recycling old, unwanted electronic items such as mobile phones, as part of a new project being run locally.
The WEEE Reuse Recycle 2012 scheme involves a total of 40 schools and is designed to encourage pupils to help recycle gadgets and gizmos, to help improve the chances of the environment in the future.
Ten of the region's local authorities have put their backing behind the scheme and kids will be taught that many items can be reused in the local community, if they are not suitable for recycling in full.
The scheme is wide ranging in its scope and will involve the collection of mobile phones and other used devices, which will then either be sent to local charity shops if they can be resold, or else passed on to official recycling centres, where they will be broken down for their constituent parts.
There is a financial incentive for the schools that involve themselves in the scheme, because those that manage to recycle the most in their council district will be able to secure their share of a number of valuable prizes.
The school which is the most prolific collector and recycler of unwanted electronics in the entirety of South Wales will be given 2000 of additional gifts, which will help in the education of its pupils.
Younger generations are being taught from an early age about the benefits of recycling, so hopefully, the future of the UK will be one in which the population is accustomed to reusing as many waste items as possible.
When it comes to mobile phones, this is particularly important, because used devices which are improperly disposed of can release harmful agents into the environment.
