Welsh Recycling Campaign Will Target Millennials

Although recycling is increasingly common across the UK, a new study suggests that people under the age of 34 are developing bad habits when it comes to disposing of packaging sustainably.
BBC News reports on a new initiative by campaign group Recycle for Wales which seeks to educate millennials about how to deal with recyclable waste and thus avoid causing contamination issues further down the line.
A quarter of those questioned in the study which helped catalyse this project said that they often left items out for collection by council recycling services even if they were unsure whether or not they would actually be acceptable.
Furthermore there is a problem associated with people failing to properly clean cans, bottles, tins and other items before they send them to be recycled. Even the smallest amount of non-recyclable matter can cause an entire collection to be rendered unusable, so getting youngsters into the habit of taking responsibility for this is essential.
Almost a fifth of those aged 18 to 34 said that they did not really think very hard about what waste they put out for recycling, with a similar proportion failing to look up the rules laid out by their local council regarding what is and is not accepted.
42 per cent said that they wanted to improve when it comes to recycling, but were currently unclear about whether or not their habits were adequate or unhelpful at the moment.
Campaign spokesperson Angela Spiteri said that the environmental impact of recyclable waste being sent to landfill was a major issue, just as unrecyclable or soiled materials being included in the wrong collection can create serious problems.
There have been further calls for manufacturers to simplify packaging and use as few materials as possible so that handling and processing is less complicated for everyone in the future.
