Wales leads UK in recycling push

The latest figures show that Wales is forging ahead of the rest of Britain when it comes to recycling, with 48 per cent of all municipal waste being sent to appropriate centres, rather than landfill, during the past financial year, according to the Guardian.
Recycling rates per household were up by four per cent year on year and Welsh authorities believe that the country is on target to meet the goal of recycling 52 per cent of all waste by 2013.
Households in England are still a way behind Welsh levels of recycling, with just 40 per cent properly disposed of in the average home last year. Given that there are looming targets outlined by the EU, it is necessary for further efforts to be made to ensure that the UK as a whole becomes greener and leaner, ensuring that waste is recycled wherever possible.
A spokesperson for the Welsh Assembly said that sustainability and environmental conscientiousness were being displayed by residents, also praising local councils for coming together to improve the state of recycling facilities.
Bridgend was highlighted as being one of the most impressive examples of an area that has turned around its recycling habits in just two short years. In 2009-10, recycling rates were at 31 per cent, but last year this had increased to an impressive 54 per cent, putting it ahead of the national curve.
By 2025, the UK aims to have a 70 per cent recycling rate, looking forward to 2050, when it is planned that there will be a zero waste approach.
This is incredibly encouraging for people who are worried about the state of the planet and want to do their bit, because it is clear that both local authorities and the people who live in Wales and other parts of the UK are continuing to make improvements.
