Wales Moves Towards Recycling-Focused Economic Model

The government of Wales is aiming to rapidly accelerate the rate of recycling within the country so that within the next 30 years it can reach 100 per cent, ensuring that no waste is sent to landfill and an entirely circular economy is created.
Resource reports that Welsh politicians are keen to deploy strategies that will allow the nation to lead the way towards a greener future, not just within the UK but also worldwide.
Indeed, the name of the paper outlining the plans for the next three decades is ‘Beyond Recycling’, and its authors claims that by eliminating waste and cutting net carbon emissions to zero, Wales will save around £2 billion a year, which will help fuel growth in other areas.
At the moment just under 61 per cent of household waste produced in Wales is recycled, so there is still quite a long way to go before it can claim to have a completely circular economy.
There are several strands to this strategic shift, one of which is the phasing out of single-use plastics. This is especially important from a recycling perspective, since some types of plastic waste are not easily recycled and even those that can be processed in this way are not endlessly recyclable, unlike equivalents like glass or paper.
Another aspect of the plan is that the country will aim to use its food resources more efficiently while also aiming to spend more cash on building materials which are either from sustainable sources or are made via recycling in the first place.
While the 100 per cent recycling goal for 2050 is a long way off, in the mean time the target of hitting 70 per cent is set for 2025, meaning that the next half-decade will be key in showing whether or not these ambitions are achievable.
