Used mobile sales to generate £11.7 billion in 2016

This year will see second hand smartphones generating an estimated £11.7 billion in the UK alone thanks to the popularity of selling old devices to recycling firms and private buyers alike, according to new predictions made by Deloitte.
The study also points out that one of the main reasons for this significant sum being achieved is that used mobiles are more valuable today than ever before. Back in 2007, the average second hand device sold for just under £21, while in 2013 the typical price had risen to almost £115.
The market for mobile phone recycling in the UK is one of the most advanced and competitive in the world, which is why consumers are in such a good position to sell their old devices, helping to fuel the growth of the industry as a whole.
Report spokesperson, Ed Marsden, explained that smartphones are being given a new lease of life thanks to the rise of second hand selling activities. He also pointed out that people are being encouraged to upgrade their handsets more regularly, not only by network providers but also by family members who are hoping to receive an old device as a hand me down.
The study looked not only at the used mobile market, but also at the ways in which smartphones are altering the habits of people who own them.
A dramatic growth in the number of people taking advantage of data-based services to make voice and video calls, as well as send text messages, has been recorded in the past 12 months. And in 2016 it is thought that people will be investing in devices which offer Voice over Wi-Fi and VoIP capabilities, ditching traditional calls in favour of taking their communications in a new direction.
