US mobile recycling rates analysed

In the UK there are a number of ongoing campaigns that are helping to grow awareness about the availability of mobile phone recycling facilities.
You can sell your old mobile phone and get a bit of cash back, or donate it to a charity to do your bit.
However, there are also millions of mobiles which remain unsold, either being sent to landfill or kept in a drawer or box, gathering dust.
It seems that our friends across the pond are similarly blase about their old mobile phones, as a new report from mobile security firm, Lockout, has found that the majority of US households have at least one unwanted handset within them.
Forty one per cent of those questioned in the survey said that they have between one and two old devices lurking somewhere, while nine per cent said that had three recyclable handsets at home.
Meanwhile, a surprising 11 per cent said that the used mobile count went as high as four or more, which means that with the significantly higher population over in America, there are many millions of phones which could well be recycled.
Worryingly, 27 per cent of those questioned said that the reason they still had old handsets at home was that they were simply unaware of what they could actually do with them, at the end of their usable life.
Seventeen per cent cited the presence of personal data on ageing devices as being their reason for holding onto them, with six per cent keeping them around in case they ever wanted to use the apps and data stored on them.
There are of course ways to make sure that personal data is not kept on an old phone, such as initiating a factory reset and taking the SIM card out to destroy it. When you sell your old mobile phone via a reputable company, you should also be sure of receiving a secure service.
