UN campaign encourages mobile phone recycling

A new campaign from the UN's Environment Programme (UNEP), has been launched to publicise the benefits of recycling old mobile phones amongst European consumers.
The project is known as Green Up! and it is being operated to show people how they can improve the sustainability of their lifestyles and also make some cash when they sell their old mobile phone to a recycling firm.
The UNEP is just one of many organisations which are helping to raise awareness about the growing issues surrounding a shortage of the materials which are used to make the components in new phones.
A recent study published by the organisation, suggests that only a small number of the precious metals found within handsets are actually recycled, which can be a real problem for the industry and is only going to hit the consumer in the wallet in the long term.
Of course the components from old mobile phones will not only be used to build new models but can also be put into the construction of other green, environmentally friendly technology, including electric car batteries and renewable energy capture schemes.
The UNEP admits that encouraging a culture of recycling can be a problem in some areas, but it hopes that the new campaign, which has been running this winter, will get people thinking about mobile phone recycling and how their actions impact on the environment.
It is a good time of year to target UK consumers with this kind of advice because Christmas will be a period during which many people receive new mobiles and will ditch their old phones, perhaps leaving them in a draw or dumping them in a bin. With mobile recycling you can make some money back on your old phone and do the right thing for the environment.
