UK to get 1.2GHz Samsung Galaxy S2

The Samsung Galaxy S2 was originally touted as having a dual core 1GHz chip, but now it looks like UK consumers could be getting an even more powerful version, with a 1.2GHz clock speed available on both cores of its CPU.
This month the launch of the LG Optimus 2X has heralded the dawn of the dual core smartphone in the UK but the 1GHz Tegra 2 chip found within this handset and the similar CPU originally destined for the Galaxy S2, is going to be outpaced by a European variant of the model, according to TechRadar.
Samsung's UK arm confirmed that the Galaxy S2 will sport a dual core 1.2GHz processor when it launches in a few week's time, although which manufacturer is behind the chip technology remains to be seen.
Some believe that Samsung will be using an in-house processor to give the Galaxy S2 a speed boost before it has even arrived. It looks like the US version of the Galaxy S2 may well be stuck with the 1GHz chip originally cited for inclusion, which is bound to make UK consumers feel lucky.
One of the reasons behind Samsung's move to up the clock speed of the Galaxy S2 may be the news that the HTC Sensation is also destined for Europe, with a class-leading 1.2GHz CPU. HTC had been keeping quiet about its plans for dual core mobiles but the excellent specs of its recently unearthed handset suggest that it has got its rivals running scared.
While a big fuss is being made about dual core smartphones, it will be interesting to see whether the extra power makes any difference in practice. Optimised software is the only way to enhance performance and app designers may be slow to take this route to avoid penalising those still using single core smartphones.
