UK ranked second in mobile recycling stakes

When it comes to recycling old mobile phones, the UK is currently the world’s second most prolific country behind top spot holder, Singapore, according to the latest figures from Deloitte.
Twenty one per cent of Brits who upgrade to a new handset currently choose to recycle their unwanted mobile device, which is still a relatively small proportion of the total phone-owning population and a figure which campaigners will, no doubt, seek to see improved in the coming years.
Meanwhile in Singapore, an estimated 26 per cent of consumers are fans of mobile recycling, with the top five being rounded out by Japan in third place, Germany in fourth and Canada trailing in fifth with its 13 per cent recycling rate, according to the Huffington Post.
Report spokesperson, Jeremy Drumm, revealed that the main reason that people choose to hold onto their outdated mobile devices is in order to protect against the likelihood of their new handset being taken out of action by damage or theft. And having a backup certainly seems like a sensible idea, as long as users are also aware of the potential benefits afforded by mobile recycling.
Recycling old mobile phones is an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to simply disposing of them in general waste. And the sooner you sell your old phone after you have upgraded, the greater the amount of cash you will receive in return for it, since even top tier models like the iPhone depreciate in value over time.
If you have more than one old phone sitting in a drawer at home then the argument that they will act as a backup becomes less tenable, because there is a finite number of spare handsets you will need. So sell your mobile phone and ensure that the UK’s recycling rates can make it a world leader in the future.
