UK mobile phone recycling firm enters Israeli market

Britain is quickly becoming one of the world leaders when it comes to mobile phone recycling, with the major domestic companies operating in this market able to benefit from the global expansion of the industry.
UK recycling firm, Redeem, announced this month that it is expanding into its 10th international market, partnering with Israel's most popular mobile network operator to offer handset recycling facilities to customers overseas.
This partnership has been established to coincide with the arrival of Apple's iPhone 5 on the Israeli marketplace and means that mobile users will be able to sell their old mobile phone in order to offset the cost of upgrading, which is a process with which British consumers will be very familiar.
At first the recycling deal will only allow for those who own a smartphone produced by Samsung or Apple to sell it when they upgrade to the iPhone 5, but it is likely that the scheme will expand to encompass a wider range of devices, if it becomes a success.
Redeem sells on about 95 per cent of the smartphones that it receives, which is a common practice that helps reduce waste.
Phones have to undergo thorough testing to not only ensure that they are fully functional, but also to remove any personal information which may have been left on them by the previous owner.
Getting mobile recycling out to foreign markets is very important, since each year there are about 400 million mobiles disposed of internationally, with a quarter of this figure accounted for by China alone.
If British recycling companies are able to get a significant share of the mobile recycling market, then it will be good for the economy and should help promote greener handset use across the whole world.
