UK launch of Samsung Galaxy Tab arrives

The Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is part tablet PC and part mobile phone, has been launched in the UK as planned on November 1st.
Samsung has been the beneficiary of significant media interest surrounding the Galaxy Tab as it is seen as the first real rival to the Apple iPad.
The Galaxy Tab is a touch smaller than its competitor with a seven inch screen, making it a little easier to take with you. It also has built-in voice calling capabilities which on the 3G model allow it to be used like a regular mobile phone, albeit a much larger, less palm-friendly equivalent.
Various UK networks and retailers are supporting the Galaxy Tab since it is focus on offering internet access on the go by harnessing 3G connectivity along with Wi-Fi for short-range online functionality.
If you want the Samsung Galaxy Tab without any network affiliation then you will have to pay around £500. However, subsidised editions which come with monthly data allocations and contracts are available.
The Galaxy Tab is part of a growing range of smartphone hybrids and its manufacturer is hoping that it will be able to capture consumer attention and sell as well as the Galaxy S mobile, which has already shifted more than five million units around the world.
The Galaxy Tab runs version 2.2 of Google's Android operating system, sports a 1GHz processor and also has a camera on the rear and front for pictures and video calling. While the iPad is larger with its 9.7 inch display, the first generation lacks any photographic capabilities.
At the moment the tablet market is still untested by Apple's rivals. The iPad has already sold in the millions, but unlike the smartphone market there is not a guaranteed audience for this type of product since the cult of Apple is a significant player in the iPad's success.
