UK firm proposes impactful plastic recycling process

A business based in the UK called Recycling Technologies has just unveiled its new system which is designed to turn waste plastics into a new material which can be used for a variety of purposes, at least in theory.
Aol.co.uk reports that the company takes advantage of a variety of thermal processes to treat and distil the plastic, breaking it down into separate components and creating what it calls ‘Plaxx’ as a result.
The process is known as ‘thermal cracking’ and relates to the fact that the structure of the plastic is broken down as it passes through the machinery, meaning that the resulting Plaxx is much easier to harness and put back into the manufacturing chain.
Creating a circular economy in which every object sold can be reused or recycled is seen as essential to reducing the amount of damage humans do to the environment. Plastic pollution has gained particular notoriety in recent months, with major campaigns attempting to highlight the plight that it creates when improperly disposed of via oceanic dumping.
Recycling Technologies spokesperson Adrian Haworth said that although it was an important step to make sure that the plastic waste generated in the UK was being handled in a sustainable way, this was only a small part of the wider issue. He argued that taking this technology global and ensuring that it could be deployed in other parts of the world would be the best way to put an end to ecological problems caused by consumption.
Plastic is widely used for everything from food packaging to mobile phone cases, meaning that making it easy to recycle is critical. Mixed material packaging poses the biggest obstacle at the moment, but manufacturers are facing increased pressure to change their designs and boost sustainability.
