Three launches new mobile donation scheme

Network provider Three has this month launched a project called Reconnected, which is designed to encourage more people to recycle old mobile phones for a good cause, while also getting rid of tech clutter that might otherwise be gathering dust at home.
While some recycling schemes involve old phones being collected, refurbished and resold to earn cash for charity, in this case the devices themselves are directly helping people. This is because the old handsets that are donated are being given to people who need them but might otherwise be unable to afford access to a mobile, according to Tech Radar.
As well as providing a free phone, Three includes three months use of its national network without charging the recipients a penny for the privilege. This focuses on helping people improve their situations and return to normality, perhaps after a traumatic experience or some other sudden change of circumstances that has left them in the lurch.
From homeless people to those who are victims of domestic abuse, the beneficiaries of this charitable project will be given an important lifeline, not just allowing them to make phone calls, but also to access essential online services, without which their lives would be even harder to manage.
Project spokesperson, Celina Benedict, explained that it was hoped that with a free phone and network access, people would be able to get in touch with loved ones, look for work and also have a way to relax and unwind, without being beholden to any long term contract.
Old phones which are donated to the Reconnected initiative will be refurbished and updated with any relevant patches by Three, before being provided to those in need along with the cables that are required to keep it charged up and allow for data synchronisation if necessary.
