Tech recycling rating scheme proposed

A new initiative to provide companies with ratings relating to how efficiently and comprehensively they recycle outdated IT equipment, including old mobile phones and computers, is being championed by The Green Grid.
While there are millions of old mobiles sitting in households across the UK, businesses have an even larger turnover of devices, which makes mobile recycling and proper disposal even more important.
The Green Grid spokesperson, John Tuccillo, said that the organisation had been working on the new metric for measuring recycling capabilities for the past 12 months and although little is confirmed about it at this point, he said that the team is basing its ratings on research from a large number of different businesses and sectors.
The Green Grid is constantly concerned about the sustainability and efficiency of IT departments and data centres, encouraging UK firms to think about the way in which they use resources and now looking into how companies handle technology after it has exceeded its useful lifespan.
If you are involved in your employer's IT department in any way or can get in touch, then it might be worth looking into your policy relating to outgoing equipment like old mobile phones and computers. Not only should it be possible to recycle a large proportion of electronic waste, but it might also be an option to get some money back for your tech, if you partner up with the right kind of recycling company.
Of course if you are responsible for the technology yourself, then you should be able to sell your old phone online and get a decent return for any unused handsets. If it is an ex-work model, then make sure that it has been completely wiped of private data, to avoid any crippling information loss disasters.
