Symbian put out to pasture by Nokia

The wind down process for the long serving Symbian mobile operating system has finally come to a close, as developer, Nokia, announced this week that it was no longer being actively developed.
Instead, Symbian is in 'maintenance mode,' which effectively means that no new updates will be launched and a small team will work on upkeep.
Symbian has been around for over three decades in various guises and it was one of the earliest smartphone operating systems around, long before iOS and Android emerged as dominant forces in the market.
It quickly became clear that Symbian was no longer up to scratch, when Nokia saw its market share tumbling and rivals taking up the slack, so it chose to gradually phase out the software and work instead with Microsoft's Windows Phone platform.
This means that now could be a good time to sell an old mobile phone based on Symbian, to squeeze the last bit of value for it, before the software that it runs becomes effectively obsolete.
Now is a good time to upgrade to a newer device, particularly if you are a fan of Nokia and want to stick with it, even after Symbian has been discontinued.
Its first generation Windows Phone devices, including the Lumia 800 and 900, are considered to be some of the best of their kind, while it is currently preparing to launch replacements based on Windows Phone 8.
Nokia is also one of the world's most green and ethical companies, regularly topping global rankings in these areas. That means you can enjoy using its products without worrying about the environmental and social impact of owning them.
The same cannot be said of companies like Apple, which is regularly criticised for using Chinese manufacturer, Foxconn, to produce its iPhone products, as a result of the conditions faced by factory workers.
