Survey reveals need for greater public awareness of recycling benefits

The latest study from campaign group Recycle Now has shown that while people are generally in agreement about the idea that recycling is a positive thing to do, very few actually understand how its impact is felt, according to the Telegraph.
Seventy four per cent of respondents said that they were aware of the advantages associated with recycling, with the minority claiming that they had not experienced any of the benefits in a direct way. This suggests that, in either instance, there is a need for better education and awareness surrounding this topic.
The report’s authors set out to showcase some of the impressive achievements of the recycling industry and reveal how little is known about the progress that has been made in recent years.
Eighty four per cent of those questioned said that they did not realise that old aerosols which are recycled can be turned into components which are used to build new mobile phones and other electronic devices. Sixty six per cent were unaware that plastic bottles can be converted into cutting edge fabrics which are used to create football kits worn by stars of the Premier League.
Two thirds said that they were also in the dark about the positive effects of recycling glassware rather than sending it to landfill. Producing glass in this way consumes less energy and is, thus, more eco-friendly.
Report spokesperson, Linda Crichton, said that she was aware of the difficulties associated with getting across the benefits of recycling to the public. She explained that projects like Recycle Week are intended to demonstrate that plenty of people actually experience the results of recycling on a daily basis, whenever they use their mobile phone, pull on a shirt from their favourite sports team or take their kids to play on outdoor equipment.
