Survey Outlines Mobile Recycling Trends

The results of a new report conducted by Top Dollar Mobile, have outlined the state of the recycling market in the UK at the moment, revealing trends and points of interest along the way. More than twelve hundred British adults participated in the study, with respondents coming from a range of age groups across the spectrum.
Almost fifty-six percent of those questioned said that they had sold an old mobile phone or sent one to be recycled at some point in the past. Younger consumers were more likely to have recycled an unwanted device, with the over-45s remaining relatively unaware of this type of service. Thirty five percent of respondents said that they had sold their old phone to a dedicated recycling company, while just 5.6 percent said they had simply thrown an outdated handset in the bin.
This suggests that more and more people are beginning to appreciate that it is much more environmentally friendly and financially rewarding to sell an old mobile phone for recycling, rather than just sending it to landfill. In spite of the growing recycling and resale rates, 60 percent of those questioned said they had at least one old phone sitting in a drawer at home. These devices are not simply forgotten, but instead kept as a backup which can be used if a consumer's main mobile phone goes missing or breaks.
Respondents also said that they were reluctant to part ways with these devices because of the perception that trade-in values were low and that there might still be private data stored on the phone which could fall into the wrong hands. The mobile recycling industry clearly has a bit of work ahead if it is going to convince more people that they should sell their old handsets.
