Supermarket Chain Offers Discounts for Customers Who Recycle

Sainsbury’s has thrown its weight behind the campaign to increase recycling rates across the UK by offering money off to those shoppers who part ways with their waste plastic in a sustainable way.
The retailer has rolled out a series of machines which will accept recyclable plastics and metals, providing users with a coupon that affords them a discount on their next purchase in-store.
Each piece of the packaging materials which is recycled will be worth 5p to customers, with a maximum discount of £25 available in a single transaction, which is the equivalent of bringing 500 bottles, cans and containers to a Sainsbury’s location, according to the Express.
For the time being this is only being operated in a single store, but if it proves to be a success then the project will likely be introduced on a wider scale.
There is a single caveat attached to the eligibility of the recyclable packaging: it has to be something that Sainsbury’s actually sells. This is clearly part of an effort to increase customer loyalty and raise the likelihood that people will return again and again to recycle old packaging and pick up new products.
Both own-brand products made for Sainsbury’s and any of the other brands which it stocks will be recyclable as part of the scheme. This is clearly not ideal, since people will not be able to offload items from other retail brands, but it is at least a step in the right direction.
Plastic waste in particular has come under increased scrutiny in the past year because of how prevalent single-use containers are and how difficult it is to recycle them more than once. Experts argue that rather than simply increasing recycling rates, retailers should aim to eliminate plastics from their packaging altogether.
