Strong growth predicted for mobile recycling market

The ongoing global rise in the number of old mobile phones being recycled is helping to contribute to significant improvements in the sustainability of the industry as a whole. And now a new study from Technavio has indicated that the expected annual increase is going to hit 17 per cent by 2019.
The study, which factors in both the mobile recycling market as well as eco-friendly, ethically produced handsets, praises the impact that has been had by a number of major initiatives designed to slash the illegal dumping of electronic waste.
Ultimately, the phone recycling industry is maturing and governments are having to face up to the risks associated with improper handling of e-waste. Meanwhile consumers are learning about the ways in which mobile phone recycling can benefit them, including allowing them to recoup a lot of the residual value that is locked in their unwanted but otherwise perfectly functional devices.
Analysts point out that the rising demand for mobile phone recycling is being further fuelled by the fact that there are simply more devices being made and sold in the first place. So people are cycling through handsets with increased regularity and the developing world is catching up with western nations in terms of ownership.
This is leading to problems for manufacturers, since the raw materials required to build new devices are not easy to acquire. As a result, recycling is an attractive proposition from many different viewpoints, allowing valuable minerals found in old devices to re-enter circulation and be harnessed for new mobiles rather than going to waste.
The report shows that although mobile phone recycling may feel like it has matured in recent years, there is still a lot of potential growth in this marketplace which is likely to be unlocked in the coming half decade.
