Stagnation in recycling could prompt change in waste collection strategies

British households may soon find that general waste is only collected once a month, if the results of a new EU report result in regulatory changes, according to the Daily Mail.
Although recycling rates have improved in the past two decades, it is argued that more needs to be done in order to convince people to recycle household waste wherever possible, rather than bagging it up and sending it to landfill.
Some areas of the UK have already switched from weekly waste collections to a two week cycle, with recyclable items collected in between. But now the suggestion is that it may soon be necessary to make waste collection an occurrence just once a month, thus making it imperative for families to recycle more and waste less, in order to avoid black bin bags piling up.
With national and continental recycling targets always on the horizon, the UK is, arguably, in need of yet another wakeup call to increase the rates of recycling and prevent households from becoming complacent about this whole issue.
With around 45 per cent of waste being recycled in the UK at the moment, the target of raising this to 50 per cent by the end of the decade at least seems attainable, until you consider that there have been few increases in recent years.
The EU report, which posits the integration of monthly waste collection to tackle the current problems, predicts that the UK could actually be recycling 51 per cent of waste by 2020 if steps are taken quickly.
While some may criticise the idea of a reduction in waste collection and an increased focus on recycling, the need to make the nation’s activities more sustainable cannot be ignored by those who want to protect future generations from catastrophic climate change.
