Sony executive hints at PSP Phone details

Following on from rumours about the development of a PlayStation smartphone, with images and excessive speculation, the head of Sony Ericsson has come out to talk about the mobile gaming market, making the validity of the leaks seem even more likely.
Bert Nordberg told the Wall Street Journal that the gaming prestige of Sony was well known and made an interesting compliment to the handset-manufacturing prowess of Ericsson.
It seems clear that Sony Ericsson is planning an Android 3.0 smartphone for launch next year, although some are convinced that it will not take on PlayStation branding but, instead, join the existing Xperia range of high end handsets, albeit with a focus on gaming.
Mr Nordberg made the point that current smartphones, such as the Apple iPhone, which rely on touchscreen interfaces, are simply lacking the type of optimisation which could make them much better mobile gaming platforms.
Mr Nordberg was relatively liberal with details when discussing the possibility of a gaming-focused Sony Ericsson handset in the future, suggesting that working with Sony's expertise in this area could produce some exciting results.
The real roadblock to the creation of a PlayStation-style phone is seen by Mr Nordberg as being the legal wrangling which will ensue, if it is to seek widespread third party software support from publishers. The iPhone has been hailed as a gaming success largely because it has a vast catalogue of third party titles to enjoy and, if Sony Ericsson is to follow in its footsteps, it must take a similar route.
