Sony Ericsson planning Walkman phone renaissance

Mobile manufacturer Sony Ericsson has published an advert which flatly states that a new Walkman phone is being developed, giving fans of multimedia playback a different handset to consider for their next upgrade.
Sony Ericsson was the king of the media phone market about five years ago with various Walkman handsets selling like hotcakes. However, in the age of the smartphone, such specialised mobiles are no longer desired by consumers.
The Sony Ericsson ad, which was posted on Android Community and features nothing but the Walkman logo and a brief tagline, is the first indication that the firm is still intent on preserving the Walkman brand in the mobile marketplace.
Sony Ericsson remains quiet about what the new Walkman smartphone might be, but the ad implies that it will be more powerful and intelligently made than any of its predecessors.
It is a given that the Walkman phone and indeed any new Sony Ericsson handset will run Android, since this platform has been the saviour of the manufacturer in recent years.
Sony Ericsson recently began using BRAVIA Mobile technology in its high end smartphones and this would be a good fit for any future Walkman release. Graphics processing and general CPU grunt will be a necessity, if the Walkman phone is to stand a chance, so expect to see a decent processor when it does arrive.
Some observers are unconvinced by the idea of a Walkman-based mobile making a return. Sony Ericsson already has the Xperia range, which is expanding rapidly and these smartphones are perfectly capable of running multimedia files as well as doing all the other smartphone tricks that consumers expect.
Of course Sony Ericsson is a company that still sees a market for specialised handsets, what with the PlayStation-certified Xperia Play destined for launch this year, so it may have enough faith in the Walkman brand to try its luck.
