Smartphone market grows as Samsung and Android dominate

The third quarter of 2012 has been a particularly good one for both handset manufacturer Samsung and the Android operating system, which it tends to use for its smartphone devices.
The total smartphone sales were up by 47 per cent when compared with the same period last year, although as a whole, the mobile market actually shrunk slightly, which is a continuation of its downward sales trajectory.
Forty per cent of all mobile phones sold are made by just three companies. Samsung and Apple, respectively, are at the top of their games in the smartphone market, while Nokia remains competitive, thanks to the popularity of its standard mobile handsets, which are not typically categorised as 'smart.'
When judged by the smartphone market alone, Nokia is seen to be struggling, since it was relegated to seventh place in the sales stakes in the third quarter, well behind front runner, Samsung.
The sales of the iPhone by Apple remain relatively small in terms of the wider market, accounting for 3.9 per cent, but this is certainly impressive for a range that is priced at a premium and comes in at a costly level on pay monthly deals.
All of these figures come from research by Gartner, which put Android's 122 million sales in the quarter at a 72.4 per cent stake of the smartphone market. This means that Google's operating system is almost impossible to assail at the moment, with even iOS looking a little weak, given the one per cent dip in sales it experienced.
With the arrival of Windows Phone 8, the incumbent Windows Phone 7 will see its market share and sales decline sharply, while Nokia's Symbian is being ditched altogether, allowing Google and Apple to grasp even more of the market in the final months of the year.
