Smartphone and e-reader combined

Imagine strapping an Amazon Kindle to an Android smartphone and you will have a fairly good idea of what the recently revealed Yota Phone hopes to achieve.
This dual screened smartphone has appeared this month, to prove that you can have the best of both worlds, as long as you are willing to take a slightly unusual route to get there.
The primary display is fairly typical of high end devices at the moment. It measures 4.3 inches across the diagonal and has a 1280x720 resolution, to provide a crisp, clear overview of the Android operating system.
But if you examine the back of the phone you will see that it has another 4.3 inch display, this time running on the monochrome e-ink technology that is common in the e-reader market.
This secondary screen will consume very little energy and provides users of the phone with a novel way of displaying text and basic images. You can flip through your library of eBooks or read today's paper on the screen, without having to burn through your phone's battery before you have even got to work.
The Yota Phone is no slouch in the specs department either, since it features a 1.5GHz dual core processor, a 12 megapixel camera and the latest version of Android onboard.
4G connectivity is also a feature, as is a big 2100mAh battery, so you should be able to get a lot out of the handset's capabilities.
Yota is a company better known for its modem equipment, but the Russian firm shows promise with its first smartphone, particularly if the e-ink secondary display works as well in practice, as it does from a theoretical point of view.
CES 2013 in January will be the event during which the Yota Phone is seen in full, so there is not long to wait until things like pricing and availability are announced.
