Sharp introduces 3D mobiles in Japan

A pair of smartphones from Sharp which have displays capable of reproducing 3D effects, without the need for the user to wear polarising glasses, have made their debut in Japan.
The Sharp Galapagos handsets, the 003HS and 005HS, are a pair of smartphones which run Google's Android operating system. The former sports a touchscreen display only but the latter has a slide-out full QWERTY keypad to target heavy texters and email users.
Both of the mobiles have 1GHz processors within and the 3.8 inch displays have Sharp's autostereoscopic technology equipped at a resolution of 800x480, making them both preside over the very highest end of the market.
While the 003HS lacks a QWERTY keypad, it does have a 9.6 megapixel camera with HD video capture, according to Engadget, while the 005HS has a respectable eight megapixel snapper.
Japanese mobile network Soft Bank is the launch partner for these two phones and to make the most of the 3D displays a number of additional deals are being constructed. Games developer Capcom is set to offer a variety of 3D titles including Resident Evil and Mega Man preinstalled on some handsets, introducing 3D handheld gaming ahead of the dedicated Nintendo DS.
The 003HS is set to touch down in the run up to Christmas, followed by the 005HS, which will launch early next year, although these will obviously be restricted to the Japanese market.
Last month an Indian firm announced that it would be bringing 3D displays to an audience looking to pay less than £100, but it is clear with these smartphones from Sharp that a premium experience is soon going to allow eye-popping visuals in a much higher price bracket. Hopefully this type of tech will not be missing from the UK market for too long.
