Scottish recycling rates hit new high

Sixty one per cent of all waste produced across Scotland in 2016, including that of households and businesses alike, was recycled rather than being sent to landfill.
This is according to new, comprehensive figures published by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency which show that it is one of the leading regions of the UK when it comes to sustainable processing of waste.
Lets Recycle reports that one of the reasons that there was such a rapid rise in recycling across Scotland is that greater attention was paid to dealing with organic waste, including leftover food collected from homes and commercial premises.
More than 600,000 tonnes of this type of waste was rounded up and recycled via composting, meaning it could be reused in a variety of industries, including agriculture. This was representative of a 78.1 per cent increase in organic waste recycling over the course of half a decade.
In total there was a 10.3 per cent drop in the amount of waste which was shipped off to landfill sites and dumped without being recycled. This still means that there are millions of tonnes of waste that do end up in these traditional facilities, but Scotland is clearly making progress and showing that stagnation in recycling rates in other parts of the UK can be avoided.
Report spokesperson, Terry A’Hearn, said that recycling was becoming part of the daily routine for millions of Scottish residents, both at home and in their places of work. This is seen as being key to boosting rates and perpetuating the spread of positive habits when it comes to waste disposal.
A’Hearn also pointed out that the main aim is to move towards a more circular economy which was efficient and cost-effective at all stages, rather than being reliant on the wasteful practices of the past.
