Scottish council achieved record recycling rates

Inverclyde Council has announced that over the course of 2012 it managed to achieve record levels of recycling, putting it well on track to meet government targets.
In the last three months of the year, 57 per cent of household waste was recycled, according to spokesperson, Michael McCormick.
Since the government has set out a target of 60 per cent to be achieved by 2020, this is one region that is well ahead of the curve.
As well as improving the collection facilities, the council has also outlined a 1.1 million investment that it is making at a local recycling centre, to make it easier for locals to get rid of unwanted items without sending them to landfill.
Mr McCormick said that the council was very thankful for the support it had received from the community, because without it, there would have been no easy way to increase recycling rates and improve sustainability in Inverclyde.
One of the collection initiatives that came into effect last year allowed for residents to dispose of their food waste separately for recycling purposes. Over 445 tonnes of unwanted food was contributed through this scheme, which meant much less was being wasted.
The council also saw the amount of waste being sent to landfill drop significantly as a result of its recycling efforts. In the last quarter of 2011, almost 4,300 tonnes of rubbish was dumped, but this dropped to just 2,750 tonnes in 2012.
It is important to note that councils can only do so much work to improve recycling rates and that the responsibility ultimately lies with individuals, because without the drive to actually help the environment, all the collections in the world will not help.
You can also make a difference by selling your old mobile phone to an online recycling firm, rather than chucking it in the bin.
