Scotland Embraces Culture of Recycling and Reuse

While many parts of the UK are in the process of taking a more active approach to encouraging people to reuse and recycle hundreds of different electronic items, efforts in Scotland are delivering tangible results.
This week it was confirmed that 100 stores dedicated to helping people reuse and recycle a wide range of products, from smartphones to settees, have now opened up since the project to change attitudes began, according to edie.net.
Scottish government spokesperson, Roseanna Cunningham, said that it was important for the country to do more about its waste issues, so educating individuals on the benefits of mobile phone recycling and the repair options that are available is an invaluable part of this.
In Scotland alone, the number of old TVs which are sent to landfill sites on an annual basis exceeds 365,000 sets, which is just one of the problematic figures which campaigners see as being unacceptable and unsustainable in the long term, hence the need for a shift in perspective.
This is not just about encouraging people to sell their unwanted items to others, but also about advising people on how to acquire the skills they might need to repair products themselves.
Hundreds of tonnes of waste which would otherwise have ended up at landfill sites have already been diverted thanks to this scheme, with the store opening milestone marking yet another significant achievement.
Scotland is pursuing the concept of a circular economy with increased vigour since specific strategies relating to this idea were unveiled last year. Within the next decade it is seeking to recycle 70 per cent of waste annually and divert the majority of unwanted items away from landfill altogether.
People living elsewhere in the UK can sell their old mobile phones and other gadgets online, as well as using recycling sites to deal with a range of items they no longer need.
