Samsung wins sustainability certification for flagship phones

After a fairly disastrous 2016, South Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung is in the process of rebuilding its reputation with aplomb in 2017. And now it has managed to achieve accreditation under a brand new international standard for mobile handset sustainability.
This accolade was awarded to both the Galaxy S8 and S8+ by UL Environment, an organisation which works with regulators in various global regions in order to determine just how sustainable devices are based on everything from the manufacturing processes involved in their creation to their recyclability.
The Gold Certification which has been granted to the S8 and S8+ signals that these phones are built with an eco-friendly focus, factoring in things like the type of plastic that is used in their construction to how efficiently the battery can be charged.
Part of this process involves working out how easy it is to recycle the devices at the end of their life spans, which is important since there are billions of mobiles in use worldwide and the majority are not currently disposed of in a sustainable way.
Assessors even took into account whether or not the phones came with separate power supplies and established just how sustainable these were in comparison with market standards.
UL Environment spokesperson, Alberto Uggetti, singled out Samsung as being a trend setter in its decision to put its devices through the sustainability certification process, proving that it is serious about addressing any issues that might exist in this area.
With e-waste seen as a growing problem on the global stage, it is good to see an organisation as big as Samsung take action to make sure that its newest devices are up to scratch and will not do more harm to the ecosystems into which they are introduced.
