Samsung planning flexible phone launch

Samsung could be joining a number of mobile phone manufacturers in releasing handsets with flexible screens, which could be on the market as early as next year, according to PC World.
A variety of companies are working with the bendy display concept, with Nokia recently demonstrating how this might be used to control menus and media playback.
Now Samsung spokesperson, Robert Yi, has stated that flexible phones could be arriving on the market within the first half of next year, if targets for development are met.
Mr Yi said that smartphones would be the first devices to benefit from flexible screen technology, although he explained that Samsung is also going to introduce tablets and other devices featuring malleable displays in the future.
Aside from enabling new interface control options, flexible displays on mobile phones will make it much harder to damage a handset during transit or by dropping it.
Samsung is likely to rely on AMOLED technology to power its flexible screens and earlier this year it claimed that the nascent technology can be folded over 100,000 times without causing any noticeable dip in performance or permanent marks on the display.
It was only a few years ago that the idea of having a full touch screen phone was relatively novel, but now these are commonplace on even the most affordable mobiles. This could ultimately be the fate of twisting, turning displays, as they will almost certainly grace high end smartphones at some point next year, before eventually trickling down to lowlier models over time.
Samsung has been insistent on creating larger and larger displays for its mobile phones, with the Galaxy Nexus and Note representing this push for increased screen size. Adding flexibility to the mix would definitely make such big handsets easier to transport.
