Sales of Windows Phone 7 handsets thought to be faltering

Industry rumours suggest that Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 operating system is not helping retailers to sell handsets to consumers, with many instead turning to established rivals like Android or even the refreshed Symbian 3 platform.
This news has come from within online phone seller Mobile Please, which says that based on its own sales figures for every 15 Android-based smartphones that it sells, just one Windows Phone 7 device is bought. In all, only three per cent of its sales are attributable to Microsoft's platform.
Although this site is the only one to have directly revealed just how Windows Phone 7 is doing since it launched last month, other big retailers, including the Carphone Warehouse, have echoed these sentiments, saying that sales of most other smartphone platforms greatly exceed those of Windows Phone 7 mobiles.
It is important to note that Windows Phone 7 is a brand new platform which has not found its footing in an increasingly competitive and overcrowded market. Android took the best part of two years to ascend to its current heights and with half a billion dollars worth of advertising behind it, Microsoft might find that 2011 is the year for Windows Phone 7 to come to the fore.
This week rumours emerged that Windows Phone 7 would be getting a serious update in January of next year and the significance of the revisions is clear because it is suggested that users will be encouraged to use their PCs to download the new firmware, implying that it will be a large file.
Currently, it is expected that Microsoft will add various new features, including the ability to copy and paste text from anywhere in the phone and its browser. This will mean that Microsoft has taken just a few months to add features that only came to Apple's iOS after years.
