Sales of Samsung Galaxy S close in on 10 million

The Samsung Galaxy S and its variants have sold nearly 10 million units worldwide, which means that the South Korean firm is in reach of its ultimate goal for the Android-based smartphone range.
In October, the manufacturer said that it would hope to shift more than 10 million Galaxy S smartphones before the end of the year and with the latest figures sitting at 9.3 million, it is tantalisingly close to achieving this landmark figure.
In its domestic market, Samsung has managed to achieve the impossible and outsell the iPhone 4, although in other regions this has not been the case.
In the UK, the Galaxy S comes in just one flavour, but US and international customers can enjoy a variety of ultimately identical handsets, with subtle aesthetic rearrangements differentiating between network operators.
The Galaxy S was the first smartphone to sport the now famous four inch Super AMOLED display which has since turned up on the Omnia 7 and now the brand new Google Nexus S, which is manufactured by Samsung.
Inside the Galaxy S, a 1GHz processor sits alongside up to 16GB of storage space, with the option to expand via microSD memory card. A five megapixel on the rear can shoot 720p HD video clips and with version 2.1 of Android, you can enjoy a world of applications.
What could make the Samsung Galaxy S push on and reach the 10 million sales mark is an update to Android. Since its launch version 2.2 and now 2.3 of Google's platform have been released, with Samsung working to distribute specially engineered updates as quickly as possible in order to capture even more customers.
