Rollout of Revamped Labels Should Simplify Recycling for Consumers

An attempt to eliminate a lot of the confusion surrounding the recyclability of products and packaging sold in the UK has got under way this month, with industry body OPRL introducing fresh designs for labelling.
LetsRecycle reports that experts are hoping the labels will bring improved transparency to the process of sorting waste that most households now undergo in order to comply with guidelines for kerbside collections offered by local authorities.
It is not just the designs of the labels which are being clarified but also the way in which the information relayed is assigned to them. For example, the recyclability of a particular material is determined according to the proportion of councils which do offer collection of it.
This is just the first step in a wider move to change the manner in which all sorts of products and recycling solutions are handled in Britain. By 2023 there will be additional measures introduced in order to hold manufacturers accountable for the sustainability and recyclability of their products and packaging, taking some of the strain off consumers as a result.
Another aspect of the labelling scheme is to offer up unique labels for materials which effectively exist in their own categories. This includes things like drinks cartons, as well as the new addition of single-use cups used to serve coffee and tea at thousands of outlets nationwide which are just now becoming recyclable in certain areas.
The labels will indicate not only that collection is available for certain items but also whether consumers should head to their local stores in order to dispose of packaging materials of specific kinds.
Calls for clarity in the labelling of consumer goods have been ongoing for some time, so the initiation of this new scheme will be welcomed.
