Robot Wars return used to promote e-waste recycling

Popular BBC show, Robot Wars, is set to return to screens later this year, with the DIY approach to designing and building combat machines set to inspire a new generation of fans, while keeping existing aficionados happy. And the scrap yard ethos that it perpetuates is being used to spread the message that electronic waste needs to be responsibly recycled in order to improve sustainability, according to Resource.
Last month, the county councils of Cheshire and Chester teamed up with Valpak to reiterate this message, creating an event at which members of the public got together to see robots in action, while reminding them of the importance of e-waste recycling.
Households across the UK discard an estimated two million tonnes of electronic waste annually. This is why councils across the country are keen to encourage more people to recycle such items as mobile phones and other gadgets, rather than sending them to landfill.
Project spokesperson, Duncan Simpson, said that creating events like this around popular shows was a good way of getting people engaged with the underlying message.
Council representative, Liz Ellis, also expounded the benefits of raising awareness about e-waste recycling, indicating that people who attended the Robot Wars-themed event were also able to find out more about the facilities that are available to them in their local areas.
Recycling is being promoted alongside re-use, with much of the old equipment collected then refurbished for resale. This follows the same pattern that is applied for mobile phone recycling, with companies often making sure that devices are fit to re-enter the market rather than dismantling them altogether.
The sustainability of the use of electronics in the UK is only possible to achieve through reuse and recycling, so promoting responsible e-waste habits by events like this is worthwhile.
