Recycling scheme helps council save thousands

Conwy Council in Wales has recently been trialling a new recycling scheme, which promises to bring money into the local economy and also help the local authority reduce the amount of cash it is having to spend on landfill.
The Daily Post reports that at the moment the council is facing land fill tax charges amounting to 12,000 every 24 hours, which is obviously quite a big burden to bear and one which is likely to be alleviated as a result of the new initiative.
Four thousand households are currently participating in the project, which might soon be available to 90 per cent of locals.
Each home is given something called a trolibocs, which is effectively a three tiered waste bin that makes it easier to sort recycling into its relevant categories, ahead of curbside collection.
In 2012, the local recycling depot used by the council dealt with thousands of tonnes of recyclable waste, which was all sold on in order to earn over £ 624,000.
Recycling in rural areas is important because of course it may be harder for residents to access the kinds of facilities that handle waste in a sustainable way.
As a result of the new recycling scheme, the local council is anticipating that an additional 2,000 tonnes of recycling will be collected annually.
Spokesperson, Andrew Wilkins, said that the households participating in the new scheme were recycling up to 20 per cent more waste, thanks to the introduction of the trolibocs, which is good news.
The design of these recycling bins is not finalised and organisers are hoping that the trial will allow them to weed out any issues, before a wider rollout is completed.
The final conclusions will be made about this initiative by September, after which point Conwy County will receive better doorstep recycling early next year.
