Recycling scheme funded by mobile provider cash

O2 has helped to kick start a local recycling scheme in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, after a school pupil took up the initiative to make it easier for people to properly dispose of materials while out and about.
Fifteen year old Atlanta Francis, who attends the Cheshunt School, got in touch with O2 and secured funding from its Think Big campaign, to create her own project in Broxbourne, known as Easy Recycling.
Her idea was to create recycling bins in the local area to go alongside existing waste bins, so that people can pop in their bottles, cans and cartons when they are on the move, rather than simply sending them to landfill or, worse, discarding them.
Each of the bins has been themed around the 2012 Olympics being held in London next month and this has provided them with a striking visual style, which helps to alert people to their presence and increase their use.
O2's Think Big campaign is designed to empower youngsters with training and also give them money to help fund projects of their choosing, which operate on a local level.
In this instance, the seed cash provided by the company was used by Atlanta to then go to the council, present her ideas and get the seal of approval to go ahead with the recycling scheme.
The 2012 theme is particularly appropriate, given that the Lee Valley White Water Centre is nearby, with this being one of the major venues that is being used during the games for events that require aquatic conditions.
It is also good to see youngsters getting involved in recycling and supporting it actively from an early age, since this bodes well for future increases in recycling rates, particularly if companies like O2 are able to continue doing their bit.
