Recycling saves councils millions

The evidence that recycling is both good for the environment and good for the public purse is nowhere more apparent than in Cheltenham. Here this month the local council announced that the efforts of residents are helping it to save over £1 million annually, according to the Gloucestershire Echo.
Forty six per cent of the waste that is produced by households in the town is currently recycled or composted, which helps to reduce the amount of money that the council has to commit to the costs of sending rubbish to landfill sites. With rates for this type of dumping always a drain on council cash, recycling is the best way to ensure that public funds can be redirected to worthier causes.
Cheltenham Council spokesperson, Chris Coleman, explained that the town is still having to spend £1.4 million on landfill disposal, but with the growing recycling movement, this is being cut year by year.
In addition to allowing people to recycle various materials through kerbside collection, the council has been improving its recycling centres and making them more accessible, so that larger numbers of people are committed to doing something positive with their waste.
Recycling unwanted items or reusing them where possible is far better than simply throwing them in the bin. And today, it is just as easy to recycle items as send them to landfill, which is why many councils are succeeding in saving money and improving the state of the environment.
Even things like old mobile phones can be recycled online, with cash incentives helping to get more people involved in this important activity.
So whether you are recycling the card, plastic and compostable items in your home or selling your old phone through the internet, there is a lot you can do to contribute to the collective efforts made across the UK.
