Recycling Gains Traction in the Capital

Figures published this week by WRAP show that the majority of people who live in London are increasing their efforts to recycle more waste rather than sending it to landfill.
62 per cent of residents questioned said that they had made active efforts to increase the amount of recycling they do each week, with the past 12 months seeing a steep rise in interest as a result of environmental campaigns and other high-profile efforts that have made headlines around the world.
Around 33 per cent of respondents said that they had been spurred into changing their habits because of growing concerns surrounding the state of the world’s ecosystem, with climate change becoming a hot button topic and indications suggesting that single-use plastics are one of the biggest issues which need to be addressed at the moment.
This study was released to coincide with Recycle Week, an event operated by WRAP in order to publicise the benefits that recycling brings to the table both in London and across the UK as a whole.
Recycling is just one facet of this campaign, as it also seeks to get more Brits engaged with the idea that it is better to repair and reuse older items rather than getting rid of them altogether.
Of course, when it comes to mobile phone recycling, in many cases if the handset is functional it will be refurbished and resold to someone else rather than being dismantled for recycling purposes. This is a good thing from a sustainability perspective, since modern devices are often used for just two years until an upgrade is provided, meaning that they can still have a lot of life left in them.
Although efforts to increase recycling have resulted in slow but steady progress in the past few years, there seems to be a new sense of momentum behind the movement today which promises great things.
