Recycle Week 2012
Monday, June 18, 2012 - 10:52:32
Between the 18th and the 24th of June 2012 a national initiative called Recycle Week is being held across the UK, which means for the next seven days, you can do your bit to help the environment and dispose of waste correctly.
It is being organised as part of the RecycleNow campaign and there are all sorts of events being held around the country which might catch your interest.
One of the main aims of the scheme is to get more people recycling the plastic bottles which are used up and down Britain.
It is estimated that over 15 million plastic bottles are used every 24 hours and if every single one of these was recycled it would be equivalent to taking 73,000 vehicles out of rotation each year, which is a not insignificant slice of carbon.
But of course plastic bottles are not the only things which are being recycled throughout the week. In Greater Manchester, there is a push to encourage people to recycle their unwanted electronic products.
The WEEE Can Do It campaign, which of course refers to the proper disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), is going to set out collection points at 22 different locations, including community centres and educational institutions.
Local people will then be able to take waste electronic products, from mobile phones to microwave ovens, to have them recycled safely and efficiently.
Interestingly, there is even a financial incentive being offered to get people in the area interested in Recycling Week. Those who part ways with unwanted tech junk will be in with a chance of winning a £200 voucher to use at Love2Shop, according to Rochdale Online.
See if you can do more for the environment by recycling your old mobile phone this week, with thousands of others.
