Recyclable Smartphone Packaging Rolled Out by Samsung

While most of the coverage of sustainability in the mobile industry focuses on the handsets themselves, there is an increasing drive in the wider consumer market to combat issues with single-use plastics for product packaging.
Because of this, Samsung has decided to update the way it protects its devices when they are on their way to customers, and it will spend the rest of the year making major alterations to the materials it chooses for packaging purposes.
This is a crucial step to take because as the world’s largest manufacturer of smartphones, Samsung holds a lot of influence and its rivals are likely to follow in its footsteps with their own sustainability improvements.
Wherever possible, plastic elements used to pack phones will be replaced with an alternative that is not an environmental hazard. This will include things like paper and cardboard, while the use of biodegradable plastics will also be pursued if there is no other option.
Samsung said that it has dedicated an entire department to the process of looking into packaging sustainability, which means that it is not just the mobile phones it makes that will benefit. From big screen TVs to household appliances, its own brand output will be packed in a more eco-friendly way across the board.
Further to its efforts to reduce plastic waste, Samsung will also be making sure to get the other materials it switches to from sustainable, ethically sound sources.
Company spokesperson Gyeong-bin Jeon said that recycling was a priority for Samsung and confirmed that it would be looking to up its game in terms of the sustainability of all its activities, regardless of whether or not this ends up costing it more cash.
Using recycled materials to make mobile phones is also on the cards, with the manufacturer laying down a schedule to harness half a million tonnes of waste for this purpose over the next decade.
