Porsche-branded BlackBerry smartphone launched

BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion, (RIM), has pulled back the curtains on a new luxury smartphone which has been fashioned by Porsche to give it that premium feel.
The BlackBerry P9981 follows in the footsteps of other RIM handsets, sporting a full physical QWERTY keypad and echoing the Bold Touch 9900 with its touch sensitive display. The components that make up the chassis include stainless steel and the phone will come with a leather-coated back plate.
8GB of onboard storage space and a 1.2GHz processor make it competitive from a performance point of view, while the BB OS 7 platform has been tweaked with a new user interface, which is exclusive to this Porsche model.
Given its association with high end vehicles, it is no surprise to see that the BlackBerry P9981 has an impressively high price point of £1,250. This is about £750 more than most of today's top of the line smartphones and so you will really need to be committed to the Porsche brand to make this investment.
It will be interesting to see whether the BlackBerry P9981 is actually appealing to the type of people who own Porsches, or whether it will instead be snapped up by people who aspire to its luxurious ethos but lack the funds to actually buy a vehicle bearing the badge.
There have been many luxury phones produced over the years, with manufacturers choosing brands including Prada, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbaba. The models have typically come in at a premium price point and only been made available in limited numbers.
If you do invest in a boutique smartphone you might be able to recoup at least some of your investment if you sell your old mobile phone online, because these models are likely to retain their value better than average handsets.
