Plastic bottle recycling boost promised by manufacturers

More of the companies which produce plastic bottles and other receptacles throughout Europe are getting together to do something about the recycling issue which is hanging over the industry at the moment, according to Reuters.
By 2025 the plan is to collect and recycle 90 per cent of the bottles which are made and sold across the continent, taking a big chunk out of the mountains of waste which are created as a result of peoples’ growing thirst for single-use containers of this kind.
In a statement issued by the European Federation for Bottled Waters, the organisation admitted that its members were complicit in creating a problem which it deems ‘unacceptable’ in the current climate. This is not just about the pure waste which is generated, but also about the littering habits which continue to do damage across the UK and internationally.
The good news is that current recycling rates for plastic bottles in Europe sit at 60 per cent, but the ambitious goal to boost this to 90 per cent over the next seven years is one which will require a lot of changes, both to consumer habits and to the regulations governing the industry.
In some European countries, steps have already been taken to battle plastic bottle waste, with Germany being one nation that has applied a deposit scheme to incentivise the collection and return of used bottles. In the UK this type of project will also be rolled out later in 2018, meaning that consumers here will need to get used to a change in the near future.
Furthermore, the European Federation of Bottled Waters said that it was compelling its members to use containers that are made from more recycled materials in the first place, which will reduce the carbon footprint of the industry.
