Pirate DVDs destined for recycling redemption

A haul of knock-off DVDs seized by police in Leicestershire are going to be sent for recycling so that they can be turned into useful products, including materials used in the manufacture of mobile phones.
The Leicester Mercury reports that thousands of the DVDs were collected over the course of two years as the team tasked with enforcing trading standards carried out a series of raids against rogue traders.
Standard procedure is for the pirated material to be destroyed by the council, but instead the discs are being sent to a charity called Planet Zero, which will then recycle them and put the resulting materials to good use.
Council spokesperson Joe Orson revealed that the trade in pirate DVDs is something that the authorities are trying to crack down on in the region. He also said that it was reassuring to see that a good cause would be benefiting from the seized discs.
Planet Zero not only recycles plastics and other materials so that they can be used in manufacturing again, but actually generates cash from the sale of the products it produces which it then passes on to other charitable causes.
Organisation spokesperson Mick Bonito explained that this donation of pirate DVDs from Leicestershire is not the only batch of knock-off discs which it is processing at the moment, so perhaps rather than simply destroying them more councils from across the UK can instead send them for recycling.
The council in Leicestershire has taken a positive approach to fighting counterfeiting in other areas, as in recent years it has donated fake fashion items that it seized locally so that they can be distributed in poorer parts of the world where clothing is much needed, expanding the charitable impact of the work of trading standards.
