Padfone from Asus gets first showing

The Padfone has been thrust into the spotlight by manufacturer Asus, brining plenty of hybrid charm to both the smartphone and tablet markets.
As its name suggests, the Padfone is a cross between two popular device types, giving users the option to head out with a 4.3 inch mobile handset or go the whole hog and take the 10.1 inch sister display along for the ride.
The smartphone runs on Android and the tablet aspect is essentially a dock consisting of an expansive touchscreen display. Once the mobile is connected to the dock the display will switch over in real time without any added hassle, giving you the full tablet experience.
Inside the tablet dock there is actually an extra battery, which means it will last for longer and have enough juice to power the larger display without sapping your phone of its charge.
Asus unveiled this intriguing device at the Computex 2011 event and although information is limited and the development process is ongoing, the concept in itself is definitely welcome.
The mobile handset looks to have a five megapixel camera on the rear with no flash and this should still be fully functional when the docking is complete, as the restraining latch mechanism seems to have an aperture to ensure its continued usefulness.
Asus argues that its Padfone will remove the need for owning both a tablet and smartphone, pointing out that transferring data between the two can be a hassle and by integrating the functionality into a hybrid device, it will be easier to use.
Of course because the Padfone will have full smartphone connectivity it will have 3G as standard, outdoing the Wi-Fi only tablets. Pricing has yet to be revealed and this could be a sticking point, but mobile contract subsidies could help it appeal to a wider audience.
